Medical specialists at the Upper East Regional Hospital have called for improved access to modern asthma medications, warning that limited availability and high costs are putting patients at risk.
Speaking on Dreamz FM’s “Breakfast Today” program to mark World Asthma Day 2026, Physician Specialist Dr. Bedu Tetteh said asthma remains widely misunderstood, despite its growing burden.
He explained that asthma is a chronic condition in which airways become inflamed and narrowed, making breathing difficult.
“It’s like breathing through a straw that is swollen and filled with fluid,” he said.
The doctors emphasized that this year’s theme, “Improving access to anti-inflammatory inhalers “is critical, as newer treatments target the root cause of the disease rather than just relieving symptoms.
Senior Medical Officer Dr. Yussif Adams said all diagnosed patients must use inhalers, particularly anti-inflammatory types that help control long-term airway inflammation.
However, Medical Officer Dr. Tomilola Ogunbanwo noted that cost remains a major barrier. She said modern combination inhalers can cost between 175 and 200 Ghana cedis per month, making them unaffordable for many patients.
The doctors warned that poor access to medication can lead to frequent hospital visits, severe attacks and even death.
“Once patients cannot breathe, it becomes life-threatening,” Ogunbanwo said.
They also highlighted the absence of effective first aid without inhalers, stressing that immediate access to medication is essential during attacks.
According to the specialists, improving asthma care will require stronger policies, better drug availability and increased public education.
