The Electoral Commission has rescinded its decision not to supervise the conduct of the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential and parliamentary primaries on May 13, 2023.

The EC had announced on Wednesday, May 10, that it could not partake in the conduct of the primaries unless all legal issues surrounding the exercise were cleared off.

This was after a presidential aspirant, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor filed a lawsuit, seeking to restrain the party from proceeding with the elections.

On Friday, May 12, however, Dr. Duffuor discontinued the case brought against the party and the EC.

Another lawsuit, which was filed on same day also attempting to injuct the processes, was discontinued shortly after it was brought before an Adentan High Court.

The party had indicated, at a press conference this afternoon, that it will superintend over its own elections if the EC fails to do so.

But in a statement this evening signed by its Chairperson, Jean Mensa, the EC said all legal barriers have now been cleared off and that it will supervise the primaries scheduled for tomorrow.

“Following the discontinuance of the Application for injunction seeking to restrain the Electoral Commission from conducting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Primaries by the applicants, namely Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and Mr. Edgar Asamoah Boateng, all legal barriers have been removed and the way is now clear for the Electoral Commission to supervise the conduct of the NDC Primaries slated for Saturday, 13th May, 2023,” excerpts of the statement read.

It continued, “The Commission has this afternoon held meetings with the leadership of the NDC to finalize modalities for the conduct of the elections. Arrangements are being put in place to ensure a credible and transparent election”.
