The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) says its government is taking stringent measures to ensure fiscal discipline and cut down expenditure.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on April 4, 2023, National Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ayesu Ntim stated that the government has not only reduced its large size but is also implementing a raft of cost-cutting measures to address the prevailing economic crisis.

Some of the measures being implemented, Mr. Ntim said, included cuts in the salaries of government officials, fuel coupon allocations for all appointees of the government, and a ban on the use of luxurious Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles popularly known as V8s by  members of the executive “except for cross-country travels” among others.

The NPP’s National Chairman is confident that these measures will control government’s expenditure and resolve the country’s economics difficulties.

“The preceding measures are among the decisive steps the government is taking to ensure fiscal discipline” he stated.

He said this while dismissing claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the government has ignored calls to reduce its size.

Contrary to these claims, Mr. Ntim said the government took concerns over its size seriously and in its second term, reduced the size significantly and is currently implementing additional measures to cut cost.

“it is not true that the government has ignored calls to reduce its size. Instead, the government has been listening to Ghanaians, establishing a more robust control mechanism to manage expenditure while maintaining a dynamic team of ministers and appointees to deliver on its mandate”.
