Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo-Dampare has denied allegation that he is in constant contact with former president, John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Akuffo-Dampare said although it is not wrong to have engagements with the former leader whether in person or via phone, the allegation levelled against is a mere fabrication by those plotting to oust him to make him look bad in the eyes of the public.
“The position of Inspector General of Police and by extension, every police officer is to serve the good people of this country of which the former president is one of those and there’s nothing wrong with that (having engagements with him).
But there is a distinction between something that has happened and something that has not happened and people want to create it in order to make their case look good so as for them to get what they want because they know that type of information sells and that’s shameful,” he said.
In the leaked tape which has become a subject of investigation by an Ad hoc Committee of Parliament, COP George Alex Mensah, one of the police officers implicated in the alleged plot to remove the IGP, is heard accusing Dr. Akuffo-Dampare of being a sympathizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He also claims that the IGP had been in constant contact with former president Mahama, who is leader of the opposition party.
COP Alex Mensah reiterated these allegations when he appeared before the committee probing the matter.
He told the Ad hoc Committee that he had intel that Dr. Dampare constantly communicates with the former leader with the hope that he will be maintained if Mr. Mahama wins the 2024 Elections.
But taking his turn before the committee today, the IGP denied ever being in contact with the former president.
He also dismissed the claim that he is a sympathizer of the NDC, stating that he is a professional police officer and does not engage in partisan politics.
Taking on his accusers, the IGP said the allegations against him are falsehoods shamefully concocted by the implicated police officers in furtherance of their malicious attempt to remove him.
“That (claim that I have been engaging with former president Mahama) is incorrect and another set of allegation just as it is to make it look that I’m a policeman who is doing politics. I’m not. I’m a professional police officer and I don’t do such things. So it’s falsehood unless maybe, they have something to prove that but it’s falsehood. It’s not true so they should stop it,” he told the Committee.
