Deputy Upper East Regional Communication Director of the governing New Patriotic Party, Andrews Atariwini has asserted that the party will have a herculean task retaining the Binduri seat if it presents again the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Abdulai Abanga for the 2024 Elections.
According to Mr. Atariwini, the Binduri Constituency has a history of rejecting sitting MPs, who were repeated in subsequent elections.
He noted that except in 1996 when the then incumbent MP on the ticket of the NDC, who was presented again in that election, won, all other MPs for the area who sought re-election since 1992 lost.
This, he fears, could be the fate of his party if it maintains the incumbent MP for the 2024 Elections.
“If you look at the scientific analysis of Binduri, I’m telling you that that calls for worry. In Binduri, you don’t repeat a candidate. I’m telling you that it’s not going to be easy because scientifically, if you do the analysis, the NPP (is at a disadvantage)” he stated in an interview on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio.
Mr. Atariwini is, however, taking solace in the achievements of Mr. Abanga as the people’s representative.
He argued that the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing has been outstanding in bringing development to the area and bettering the lives of the constituents since he took over as MP.
“But one thing that delights me is that our candidate who is the current MP and I believe he will be retained to run has performed, has done some work. At least, since 1992, we haven’t seen any MP work in that manner”.
He is, therefore, pinning his hopes on this supposed monumental achievement of the incumbent MP to break the jinx if he is presented again for the next polls.
“I think that those kind of commitments (by the MP) are going to give him the edge”.
