It is a good practice to eat before brushing when you wake up in the morning, a dentist with the Bongo District Hospital has said.

According Agana Emmanuel, brushing immediately after eating removed food particles trapped in between the teeth.

Many in Ghana often brush shortly after waking up in the morning before taking their first meal.

But this practice, Agana said, is akin to “you finished bathing then decide to jog, after exercising and you are sweating, you now wear your clothes”.

He said it is advisable to take breakfast before brushing so as to clear food particles stuck in between the teeth after the meal.

But that, he stated, should only be the case if you had brushed before going to bed the night before.

“If you have actually brushed in the night, that should be the way (to eat before brushing). if you brush then you sleep, the next day, it is just a matter of rinsing your mouth with water then you eat, any food particles that get stuck in between the teeth, you now brush to remove those ones,” he explained.

Agana Emmanuel, who was speaking on dental health in an interview on A1 Radio Bolgatanga, emphasized the importance of dental care.

He urged the public to brush their teeth twice daily as well as visit the dentist as regular as recommended.

Doing this, he said, will prevent the loss of teeth even at old age and gum diseases.
