MTN SELF-SERVICE SIM SWAP

In a bold move to ease the pressure on clients requiring service at its service centers across the country and to reduce the need for physical presence, MTN Ghana has launched a Self-Service Swap.

Anchored on Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebration, which revolves around freedom, empowerment, and justice, the initiative looks to end the stress of visiting the offices of the network provider to swap any SIM card.

This has become necessary as MTN on the average, processes about 250,000 SIM Swaps at their customer service centers every month.

Ahead of the launch on March 11, 2026, a pilot was conducted using the MTN app and the USSD channels from October last year through to January 2026. The network provider disclosed that over 18,000 customers successfully completed SIM swaps on their own or via assisted platforms.

In a speech read by Chief Customer Experience Officer Samuel Appiah on behalf of Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager of the Northern Business District, at the launch, he noted that MTN is delighted to give its customers independence in seeking service without the need to queue.

“For many years, SIM swap has required customers to visit our service centres or raise a request online for assistance. Today, that has changed. We are proud to give our customers the freedom to complete this essential service conveniently, securely, and independently from wherever they are, without the need to travel or queue at a service center,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Zonal Manager of the National Communications Authority, Inusah Salman, commended MTN Ghana for their continuous investment in innovative solutions that respond to the evolving needs of customers.

“We commend MTN Ghana for continuously investing in innovative solutions that respond to the evolving needs of their customers. Such initiatives align with our broader objective of encouraging digital transformation and improving service delivery across the telecommunications ecosystem.”

“However, while we embrace innovation, we must also emphasize the importance of compliance with regulatory requirements, particularly those relating to SIM registration and customer identification. These measures are essential in safeguarding the integrity of our telecommunications network and protecting users from fraud and other security threats,” he said

According to MTN, the launch of the Self-Service SIM Swap Initiative is part of a broader vision to reduce agent-assisted SIM swaps both online and in-store.
