Former Deputy Upper East Regional Minister Daniel Awenyue Syme has died, his family announced Sunday.
His son, Jonathan A. Syme, said in a statement that his father passed away on March 16, 2026, after years of battling health challenges.
“Doctors told him years ago that he would not make it this long, but he defied all odds,” he said, adding that the family was grateful he did not suffer in his final moments.
Syme served as District Secretary and later District Chief Executive of Builsa District between 1990 and 2001, where he was credited with contributing to local governance and development efforts.
He later rose through the ranks of the audit service to become Assistant Auditor General before serving as Deputy Upper East Regional Minister from 2012 to 2016.
Family members described him as a “model politician and auditor” who prioritized the well-being of others and remained committed to public service throughout his career.
“He gave everything he had to the betterment of others and always put himself last,” Jonathan Syme said.
Tributes have begun pouring in from community members and colleagues who remembered the late administrator for his dedication, integrity, and leadership.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
