Former Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari says members of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not support him when he ran for the Bolgatanga East Constituency seat on the party’s ticket.
Mr. Bukari said the party, at the time, was deeply divided and thus, some members opposed his bid and actually voted against him in the election.
“When I was running for the seat, there was no unity in the party. My own people voted against him. I know them. They made Ayine beat me heavily,” he told a crowd of supporters who cheered and hailed him.
He is, however, hopeful that the current parliamentary candidate of the party for the Constituency will not face similar fate.
Mr. Bukari, who was speaking at the Extraordinary Delegates Conference of the NPP held over the weekend for the confirmation of the party’s sole parliamentary candidate aspirant for the area, entreated constituents to rally behind the new candidate and ensure that he is elected MP in next year’s polls.
He said Mathew Silas Amoah has demonstrated, through his philanthropic activities, that he has the constituency at heart and will lead its rapid development if he is elected the area’s representative.
“Our gods, our ancestors are fully behind him., He is going to win. You the young are the future, He is your age mate and he is here to help you. He is very generous and so let’s support him. Vote for Silas Amoah as your MP”.
He took a swipe at his onetime contender and MP for the area, Dr. Dominic Ayine for not living up to expectations.
According to him, Dr. Ayine has failed to deliver on most of the promises he made to the people despite being in office for close to 12 years.
Rockson Ayine Bukari was the first candidate of the NPP to run for the seat after its creation in 2012.
He, however, could garner about 24 percent of the votes, losing the election to Dr. Ayine who is still occupying the seat and seeking re-election in 2024.
Mr. Bukari attributed his defeat in that election to his age and therefore, is hopeful that Mathew Amoah, who is way younger even than the incumbent MP, will snatch the seat for the NPP.
