The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended leadership of the Minority Caucus and its Members of Parliament (MPs), who stood by the party’s position against the approval of ministerial nominees made by President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The party, in a statement signed by its General-Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said it will in due course identify and laud them publicly for their decision to stay true to its expectations and that of Ghanaians.

“The party commends highly, the leadership of the Minority caucus in Parliament and Members of Parliament who stayed true to the expectations of the party and the Ghanaian people. We will stop at nothing to identify them and publicly laud them in due course,” it stated.

The party added, “Their loyalty and patriotism will not be forgotten”.

It, however, condemns those of its MPs who sided with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Majority Caucus to vote for the approval of the nominees.

According to the party, the action of these MPs does not “only betrays the expressed will of the party, but the desire of the Ghanaian people and constitutes a massive stab in the back of the good people of Ghana”.

It said although the decision of some of its MPs to “lend support to the ongoing recklessness by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government” in the face of the prevailing economic crisis is unpardonable, it cannot be held responsible for their action since it’s corporate organisation with multiple structures represented by officials who are expected to act in the interest of Ghanaians.

This comes after some Minority Members of Parliament broke ranks with the party yesterday and voted for the approval of 6 ministerial nominees made by President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The party had ordered all members of the Minority Caucus to stay in the House and block the approval of all the 6 nominees to drum home its demand for reduction of the size of government.

In a February 19 statement giving the directive, the NDC said the president had been adamant to its call to cut down on the number of his appointees and thus, rejecting the approval of his nominations would compel him to do so.

However, some members of the  party’s caucus defied its directive and voted for the approval of the nominees.

While condemning the MPs, it reiterated its call on President, Akufo-Addo to downsize his government to reflect the difficult times the country finds itself.

It added, “The NDC shall continue to hold the government accountable for the socio-economic quandary that our country finds itself and present our superior alternatives to Ghanaians in our bid to rescue the soul of our nation”.
