As the bill seeking to proscribe witchcraft accusations awaits a presidential assent, a 60-year-old woman has lost her life after being accused of witchcraft.

Konjit Duut was beaten to death by community members at Bunbuna in the Yunyoo/Nasuani District of the North East Region after one of them alleged that he had seen her in his dream, trying to harm him.

According to family of the deceased, she was summoned for questioning by the community members over the allegation.

They said, while she was on her to report the allegation levelled against her to her family in the next village, some of them accosted her and beat her to death.

Police in the area has since arrested one person in connection with the incident.

But the family are demanding the arrest and prosecution of all persons involved in the dastardly act.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, a brother of the deceased, Jacob Kauk said the family will not bury her mortal remains unless their demand is met.

Parliament, last month, passed the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022 criminalising the declaration,  accusation or labelling another person as witch or wizard in Ghana.

The bill is, however, yet to receive presidential assent to take effect.

One of the sponsors of the bill and the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu wants president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately assent to the bill.
