A member of former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s campaign team wants Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to stand down for Mr. Kyerematen to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 Elections because the former minister is older than the Second Gentleman of the land.
According to Carlos Kingsely Ahenkorah, the NPP, as a conservative party, honours long service and the elderly in the party thus, Mr. Kyerematen should be appreciated with the flagbearer position for next year’s polls.
He said although Dr. Bawumia is competent and has all what it takes to be president, he should forgo his ambition for now and give way for the former minister to run on the NPP’s ticket for the 2024 Elections because the latter is way older and experienced than him.
“Vice President Bawumia, everybody knows he has the competence to be a president but our position is that Alan is far more ahead in age and so many things. Alan has been around for a very long time, Alan is older than him. So we plead with him to let Alan go so that he can lead later,” he stated on UTV.
He added, “This giving chance to older people started in 1998 when president Kufuor and Akufo-Addo contested for the flagbearership. Party’s stalwarts then asked Akufo-Addo to let Kufuor go because he (Akufo-Addo) was younger and had age on his side so that he can contest later when Kufuor finished his tenure”.
Carlos Ahenkorah, who is the Member of Parliament for Tema West Constituency, said this on the back of a meeting the Vice President held with some members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament, informing them of his decision to run for the flagbearership of the party.
The party is scheduled to open nominations for the presidential primaries on May 26, 2023.
Spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako has indicated that he will formerly announced his bid to run for the party’s top position before the date for the opening of nominations.
But Carlos Ahenkorah wants the Vice President to shelve his presidential ambition for now since he is way younger than Mr. Kyerematen and still has age on his side to contest future elections.
