Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr has entreated the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leadership to rise up to the occasion and take punitive actions against its stalwart and Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Mr. Kweku Baako asserted that Mr. Agyapong’s conduct in public particularly threats he allegedly issued on the lives of journalists including the late Ahmed Hussein-Suale and recently, Erastus Asare Donkor of Multimedia Group Limited has brought the party’s image in disrepute hence, the need for it to take action against the MP to purge its image.

“Something ought to be done. The party should wakeup because the collateral damage is obvious,” he stated on JoyNews TV’s news analysis program, NewsFile.

The veteran journalist said this while adding his voice to the public condemnation of the Assin Central MP who doubles as Chairman of Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee for allegedly threatening the life of a journalist with media conglomerate, Multimedia Group Limited.

The outspoken MP is said to have called for the assault of the journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor following his journalistic work during the shooting incident at Ejura which resulted in the killing of two persons and the injury of 4 others and his subsequent appearance before the ministerial committee investigating the incident.

The threat on the life of the journalist which has sparked public outrage has been reported to the police by the Multimedia Group Limited and the report copied to Parliament as well as other agencies locally and internationally calling for investigation into the matter and the provision of security for the journalist.

Pressure group, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has also petitioned the US government to impose visa restriction on the MP for his actions.

Following the report, the police has indicated that it has commenced investigation into the matter. Also, Parliament has referred the MP to its Privileges Committee for him to be investigated and possibly sanctioned.

Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr, like many others, believes the failure of the NPP to sanction Mr. Agyapong or distance itself from his distasteful acts over the years has created an impression that the party endorses his actions and thus, the need for the party to take punitive actions against him so as to dispel such impression.
