Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged top in the Special Delegates Conference of the governing New Patriotic Party.
Officials result from all 17 voting centres across the country indicate that the Vice-President polled 629 votes, representing 68.15 percent of the total valid votes cast. He won in all the regional voting centres including the National Headquarters.
Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong caused an upset in the conference as he beat former Trades and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to place at second.
Mr. Kyerematen, prior to the polls, was tipped to pick the second spot after the Vice-President. He, however, did not live up to expectations as he polled a paltry 95 votes, representing 10.29 percent to trail Kennedy Agyapong, who garnered 132 votes, representing 14.30 percent of the total ballots cast.
Former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Afriyie Akoto emerged fourth with 32 votes.
Francis Addai Nimo and Boakye Agyarko secured 9 votes each, tying at the fifth position.
The rest of the contestants; Kofi Konadu Apraku, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Joe Ghartey and Kwadwo Poku secured 0, 6, 4 and 3 votes respectively.
The Special Delegates Conference has been held to whittle down the number of aspirants to 5 ahead of the main presidential primaries in November.
Per the outcome, four of the aspirants; Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Afriyie Akoto have made it through to the main election.
There is, however, a tie in the fifth position between Mr. Addai Nimo and Mr. Agyarko and the party is set to hold a runoff on Saturday to break the tie.
The other 4 contestants have, however, had their ambitions of leading the party in the 2024 polls dashed.
