Ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE ), which commences in the early days of June, the Assembly Member for Soe – Yipaala Electoral Area in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region has presented mathematical sets to candidates of the St. Joseph Junior High School in Soe and the Yipaala Junior High School as a way of motivating them to improve upon their performance.
The presentation was done during a joint community durbar held at the St. Joseph JHS, which brought parents and other stakeholders together to advise the learners and provide them with career guidance.
Some teachers were also recognized for their contribution to the improvement of the standards of education in the community.
The candidates, who are preparing themselves for the examination were then given mathematical sets, pens, pencils, and rulers to aid in their preparation and to encourage them to perform well.
Explaining the essence of the exercise in an interview with Dreamz News, the Assembly Member, Dr. Aduko, noted that he was saddened by the dwindling performance of candidates from the community, hence, the decision to turn his attention to education in the area.
Dr. Aduko blamed the poor performance partly on poor parenting.
He noted that by promising to donate 1000 cedis to candidates who obtain between 6 and aggregate 15, he believes the candidates will be motivated to achieve better results.
“This is the third time we are organizing this event to encourage the candidates and to let them know that we are behind them as they prepare to write the exam. I realized that the performance of our children started dropping, and this is one of the key steps to improve the performance of candidates in our schools. To motivate them, I have promised to give any candidate who obtains between an aggregate of 6 and 15.” Dr. Aduko emphasized.
Bringing the two communities together, according to the assembly member, is to foster unity and cohesion for the development of the region.

The Headteacher of Yipaala JHS, Tumsongo Sebastian, disclosed that the school is presenting 45 candidates this year. He said the first batch in 2022 recorded remarkable results.
He is optimistic that the candidates this year will record better results.
The Headteacher of St. Joseph JHS, Diana Amponsah, says her school has been scoring a 65% pass rate in the past five years.
Last year, the school had the best grade being aggregate of 32. She is hopeful that things will be better this year.
