The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has received a delegation from the Ghana Embassy in Burkina Faso that escorted a Ghanaian national back home after he was found in distress in the West African country.
The delegation was led by a Counsellor in the Consular Section of the Ghana Mission in Burkina Faso, Mr. Emmanuel Owusu Andah Peprah, acting on the instructions of Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, H.E. Kenneth Akibate.
The return of the Ghanaian national, identified as Nana Yaw Atta, followed arrangements made by the Regional Minister to support efforts by the Embassy to bring him back to Ghana and reconnect him with his family.
Briefing the Regional Minister, Mr. Peprah said Nana Yaw Atta was found in the northern part of Burkina Faso, an area considered unsafe due to prevailing security concerns. He explained that the Burkina Faso authorities rescued him and subsequently handed him over to the Ghana Embassy in Ouagadougou.
According to Mr. Peprah, preliminary information indicates that Nana Yaw Atta is from Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region, and the Embassy is working closely with relevant authorities in Ghana to trace and reunite him with his family.
Mr. Peprah further noted that the man appeared destitute and showed signs of mental health challenges, making it difficult to establish how he ended up in Burkina Faso.
Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga commended the Ghana Embassy and the Burkina Faso authorities for their efforts in ensuring the safety of the Ghanaian citizen and facilitating his return home.
As part of measures to provide immediate care and support, the Regional Minister handed Nana Yaw Atta over to the Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mrs. Rosemary Kadua Awiah, for further assessment and assistance while efforts continue to locate his relatives.
