The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) in the Upper East Region has in the first week of its mass revenue mobilization exercise retrieved over GH¢ 2 million from defaulting customers.

NEDCO embarked on aggressive revenue mobilization drive to retrieve over GH¢ 125 million owed by customers in the Upper East and North East Regions. The high debt levels owed by electricity consumers have reached unsustainable levels, thereby posing threats to the survival of the utility company.

Upper East Regional Billing and Revenue Officer William Kwame Asare disclosed that some 2,741 customers were disconnected in four days into the exercise.

“We began the exercise last week and it has been very good. Last week we disconnected about 2741 customers between Tuesday toll Friday. We were able to mobilize about GH¢ 2,235,338.00,” he said.

Mr Asare said some major institutions in the region that were disconnected have made part payments which have been followed with signed payment agreements for the affected institutions to continue to settle their debts within agreed timelines and at same time strictly honor their current bills.

“This morning, even before we set off to the field, some institutions are making payments and that is very good for us,” he added.

He noted that the exercise will continue until NEDCO recovers over 75% of the colossal debt amount owed by customers while adding that “We are urging all our customers who are in debt to take steps to pay their amounts or come and pay part and sign payment agreements towards paying the arrears. We don’t want to inconvenience them by disconnecting them”.
