A Spokesperson for the Campaign Team of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to take a break from the political scenes and reflect on his stewardship in office in the 2 terms of the Akufo-Addo administration instead of seeking to lead the party.
Michael Abogro said he does not see anything novel the Vice-President has to offer the NPP and Ghana after failing to live up expectation as the head of the Economic Management Team in the last 6 years and thus, should stand down for a more potent candidate to lead the party.
“What new do you have? You’re sitting there, you’re in charge, you’re the economist of our time, better place to manage the economy, head of the economic management team, what again do you have to offer?” he questioned in an interview on State of Our Nation.
“The vice-president still sits in office because he and the president ran on one ticket and they had one vision. So how new, how radical will his new vision and aspiration be able to change things after he has managed the economy for 8 years?”
Mr. Abogro believes Dr. Bawumia will hamper the NPP’s chances of winning the 2024 Elections should he sail through to become the party’s flagbearer.
He, therefore, wants him (Dr. Bawumia) to, rather than eyeing the topmost position of the party, take time off from politics and have a retrospection on what he (Mr. Abogoro) believes are his failures that have brought the nation to its kneels so that he could offer sound advice to aid the party stay in power beyond 2024 while restrategising for a return in the future.
“We are not fighting. It’s a family thing, and we are making the point that you (Bawumia) have done your part for 8 years, take a break, reflect and think through. ‘what is it that I was supposed to have done that I didn’t do right? What’s it that we promised to do that we couldn’t do it’ then you can offer your advice at the background and rebound another time,” he advised.
Mr. Abogro’s comments come on the heels of the commencement of vetting of flagbearer aspirants of the NPP.
The process, which began on Monday, July 3 and expected to end on Thursday, July 6, will see the committee the party constituted assess the eligibility of the 10 persons who have filed nominations to contest the presidential primary of the NPP.
3 of the aspirants were vetted on Monday and the rest are expected to be vetted in the coming days.
