Deputy General-Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande has decried what he believes is a nepotistic government being run by president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview on State of Our Nation, Mustapha Gbande said the president and his government, instead of creating opportunities for the masses, are busily amassing wealth, leaving majority of the populace in despair and trapped in abject poverty.

This, he stated, was not the case under the erstwhile Mahama administration. He argued that the previous government had created an enabling environment for the growth and prosperity of every citizen regardless of their political affiliation and ethnic background.

“In 2012 to 2014, the government of the NDC created an atmosphere, a room for the growth of Ghanaians, not family members, not people based on which region you comes, the basis of our constitution is for government to create the enabling environment for Ghanaians to thrive, to grow, to live and to prosper,” he said.

“And so the NDC created that atmosphere where you didn’t need to be NDC to grow, didn’t have to be a Northerner to grow, you only have to be a Ghana to have a government that create the platform for you to grow”.

But since its assumption of office in 2017, he claimed, the Akufo-Addo government has not just run the country aground but has deprived Ghanaians of the few opportunities available.

“Today, if you are not from Nana Addo’s family, if you are not on the strength of his kitchen cabinet do not prosper,” he stated.

It is for this reason, Mr. Gbande said, that the NDC is poised to recapture power from the governing party in 2024 and turn things around for the Ghanaian people.

The NDC Deputy General-Secretary was speaking as part of the party national executives’ tour Of the Upper East Region.

The National Organiser, Dr. Joseph Yamin, his Deputy, Elikem Kotoko and the Deputy General-Secretary are currently in the region to mend cracks in the party following its primaries.

Elikem Kotoko, who also spoke on the show, decried the pervasive corruption that he said he has characterised the government.

“While president Mahama is busy canvassing for us to come together to build the Ghana we want, they are very busy looting the Ghana we have. And they make it now look as if politics has become the surest way to acquire ill-gotten wealth,” he stated.
