Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo-Dampare has taken on one of the police officers implicated in the leaked tape, COP George Alex Mensah for describing him as the worst head the police service has ever had.

Responding to questions by the Ad hoc Committee set by Parliament to probe the alleged plot to oust him, Dr. Akuffo-Dampare described the claims by the embattled police officer as unfounded and unfortunate.

He said his administration, since taking over the management of the police service, has resolved to transform the service to become one of the best institutions in the country and a reference point on the continent.

“Since my colleagues and I and the rest of the commands across the country had the opportunity, we committed ourselves to transforming the organization to become the best institution in the country and a reference point for a Africa and beyond in a teamwork fashion”.

To this end, the service under his leadership, he said, has initiated about 45 policies and is working in conjunction with other security agencies to ensure law and order in the country

Enumerating some of these initiatives, Dr. Kuffo-Dampare said with his performance thus far, he cannot be described as the worst IGP.

He added that the embattled senior officer should have kept quiet and allow Ghanaians assess his performance if he had nothing better to say.

“All these interventions, almost about 45 of them and putting it together, working with the other security agencies that’s what has brought us thus far in terms of the type of internal security that we enjoy” he said.

“So with anybody coming to say that ‘you are the worst IGP’ is unfounded, it’s unfortunate and I think the best the person could have done if he had nothing to say is probably keep quiet and allow the good people of this country to make a determination on us”.

COP Alex Mensah, who was the second witness to be interrogated by the committee, accused the IGP of mismanaging the police service.

He claimed most of the police personnel were disgruntled due to the IGP’s failures.

He said although he drew Dr. Akuffo-Dampare’s attention to his leadership lapses, he remained adamant to his advice.

But appearing before the committee, the IGP did not only dismiss the claim but call Mr. Alex Mensah out for fabricating stories to cover up his “shame”.

He also rubbishes claims by COP Mensah and Superintendent Lysander Asare that he orchestrated the recording of the tape in which the two officers are heard allegedly to oust him(the IGP).
