Licentious lifestyles of unmarried people have been identified as a major reason most homeowners are unwilling to rent out their premises to them.
According to Upper East Regional Manager of the Rent Control Department, Adam Yaminu Kasim, some unmarried people, after securing accommodation, turn the premises to sex scenes where they engage in marathon sex with different partners to the displeasure of the owners.
This, he indicated, often results in conflict between the homeowners and the tenants that end up at his outfit.
Mr. Yaminu said although his outfit is impressing upon landlords and ladies not to refuse single people accommodation but do proper background check when they come seeking shelter, most of them (homeowners) are now unwilling to let out their premises to singles.
“We often advise the landlords that when the person is coming they should try to engage them, at least, play on their intelligence, you will get some information. It will give you an idea of the kind of person that you are dealing with or who’s coming into your house and you can make an informed decision,” he said on Breakfast News.
He continued, “But because some landlords have encountered some one or two individuals who have in one way or the other misbehaved, they will just come to the conclusion that ‘so far as my premises is concerned, it is a no no for any single person’”.
The Regional Rent Control Department Manager is, therefore, urging unmarried people to live decent lifestyles in order to make not only their search for accommodation easier but to live peacefully with their neighbours.
He said while they are at liberty to live their lives as they please, some of their lifestyles do not just affect them but the people around them hence, they should exercise restraint in most of the things they do.
“In as much as the law does not frown up on relationship and the landlord doesn’t also have the right to stop you from engaging in any relationship but we should do it with caution. We should be reasonable about it. Because in any case, you are not living in isolation. You’re living with people and you wouldn’t like to send that bad picture out there”.
“If you live in a compound with other people and then you begin to use your apartment for certain immoral activities, it sends a very bad signal about even your colleague tenants not just the landlord. And most often, it’s their colleague tenants who even report the issues to the landlord”.
