Radio broadcaster, Stanley Abopam believes Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has had a significant impact on the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) than any of the other presidential candidate aspirants.

Speaking on State of Our Nation, Mr. Abopam said Dr. Bawumia, since his emergence in the political limelight, has toiled earnestly for the party, turning its fortunes particularly in the North of the country around in recent elections.

This track record of Dr. Bawumia, he argued, makes him stand tall among all the presidential aspirants including his likely close contender, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen despite the fact that he joined the later than all of them.

“From 2008 when Dr.  Bawumia came into the limelight, and started his effective contribution to the party, if you also pick Alan Kyerematen’s from 2008 to date, there is no question that he has outclassed Alan. There’s no question,” he said.

“The change Bawumia brought is visible. Do you know that in terms of marginal terms, the NDC has been appreciating in the Ashanti Region just as the NPP has been appreciating in the Northern Ghana. But the NDC has not increased like the NPP has done in Northern Ghana? You cannot, in writing that glory, discount the Bawumia factor”.

Mr. Abopam also believes the Vice President had been outstanding in his role as running mate to the then presidential candidate of the NPP.

He averred that since the country’s return to constitutional rule in 1992, no vice presidential candidate has had the clout and the impact that Dr. Bawumia had on the NPP’s campaign.

“We have never, in the history of the political dispensation of this country from 1992, seen a very effective, versatile and useful Vice presidential candidate as compared to this young man (Dr. Bawumia). Even the one (Mahama) who comes near, when he became Atta Mills’ Vice presidential candidate, even him, the CV he brought, the contribution he brought was not comparable to what Bawumia brought”.

His comments come on the back of the filing of nominations by aspirants to contest the party presidential primary.

On May 26, 2023, the party opened nominations for interested candidates.

About 10 persons have picked forms to enter the race and are expected to file their nominations by June 24, 2023.

So far, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen who is tipped to be a frontrunner has filed his papers with his likely closer contender, Dr. Bawumia set to file his on Friday, June 16, 2023.
