National Peace Council holds sensitization in Bongo

The National Peace Council (NPC) convened a two-day community forum, bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders, in an effort to address the pressing issues plaguing the Bongo District of the Upper East Region relative to peace.

Funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the sensitization engagement was aimed at resolving developmental issues and enhancing social cohesion in the District.

Through open and candid discussions, participants delved into critical concerns such as human rights violations, negative gender norms, and farmer-herder conflicts.

As part of its program to empower women and youth, the NPC sought to prevent conflicts and promote peace in northern Ghana.

Participants took a significant step towards building a more harmonious community by exploring ways to respect human rights, challenge harmful gender norms, and resolve disputes peacefully.

Dr. Sabina Appiah-Boateng, a Lecturer at the UCC, who was the facilitator of the program, emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, particularly between residents and Fulani communities.

“We’ve seen clashes arise simply because community members don’t respect the rights of the Fulbe, or vice versa,” she noted.

“But through this sensitization, we’ve come to understand that every individual has inherent rights, regardless of their background or community membership,” she added.

Dr. Appiah-Boateng also highlighted the need for mutual understanding between herdsmen and farmers, stating, “Herdsmen must not let their cows graze on someone’s farm, as that’s someone’s source of income. Similarly, community members must not encroach on grazing areas, using population growth as an excuse to farm.”

By recognizing the interconnectedness of their rights and responsibilities, participants will begin to forge a path towards peaceful coexistence.

As the NPC continues its vital work in northern Ghana, this community forum marks a significant milestone in the journey towards lasting peace and social cohesion.
