The Ghana Education Service has rescheduled the reopening of schools for final year Senior High School students to May 5, 2021.

Form 3 students of the various public SHSs across the country were scheduled to return to school on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 after breaking for a holiday in early March.

But in a notice on the day of reopening, the education management body said it has rescheduled the reopening date to May 5 following a proposal from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS).

This change in date of reopening, it added, applies to all form 3 students in both single and double-tracked schools.

While stating that the education calendar remains unchanged, it indicated that it will give further details about the new arrangement in due course.

“Management has considered a proposal from CHASS and has therefore revised the academic calendar as follows;

Reopening for Form 3 students have been rescheduled for 5th May 2021.

This applies to all Form 3 students (single track and double track schools)

Further details will be announced. All other arrangements on the calendar remain unchanged,” it announced.

This comes on the back of reports of food shortages in some SHSs in the country.

Last month, some teacher unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) as well as the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) raised concerns over delays in the supply of food items to Senior High Schools.

The teacher unions, in a statement, said not only had the schools not been supplied with food items since reopening after the Covid-19 induced shutdown but the Ministry of Education had also failed to make available the needed funds for the smooth running of the schools warning that schools could be forced to shutdown if immediate steps were not taken to address the issues.

But days after the teacher unions’ statement, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum announced that the Ministry had released funds to the Buffer Stock for the supply of food items to schools.
