The Medical Superintendent of the Bongo District Hospital, Dr. William Gudu says he has regretted accepting to work in the Upper East Region.
Mr Gudu noted that, he has sacrificed to work in the region since 1997 to the disadvantage of his family as he hardly visits due to long distance and time constraints.
After all the sacrificial work he has committed to for the region in the last 26 years, Dr Gudu believes that, some people in the region particularly in the Bongo District are not appreciative of it, hence his regrets.
“In case people die and come back, I don’t think I will ever step in any of the boarders of the north. I have really regretted, coming to upper east. I won’t lie to you. The first time I left the borders of Offinso was when I was coming to upper east in 1997.
I didn’t even know anywhere. But I came and stayed. I just said I wanted to help. I have weakness for people who are vulnerable and I think that’s my mistake. But we all learn from our mistakes,” he said.
“Already, there was pressure from my family for me to return home. But I didn’t heed to the pressure and continued to stay, thinking I would move at the right time. That was the mistake I made. But we all learn from our mistakes”.
His comments come after a group calling itself United Brothers Association from the Bongo District, on July 27, petitioned the District Chief Executive, Rita Atanga over what they claimed are administrative mishaps in health care delivery in the hospital, which they say are largely the creation of the Medical Superintendent.
The group among other things alleged that the medical superintendent of the hospital is not comfortable working with other medical doctors who are posted to the facility.
They stated that, their sources indicate that Dr Gudu always finds ways to frustrate such officers to move away from the hospital.
The group also accused Dr. Gudu of dereliction of duty and assigning his son to a sensitive ward without any supervision.
They claimed the Medical Superintendent does not attend to patients in other wards except the maternity where he allegedly makes some monetary gains.
But responding to allegations of offering employment to his son at the hospital, Dr Gudu said, his son is already a medical doctor at the Menhyia Hospital in the Ashanti Region but was only assisting when he visited him during his leave.
“Everybody was happy in the hospital when he decided to help. They said I assign children ward to him. The only day he went to children’s ward was when I was taking him round to introduce to the staff. He never had the opportunity to enter kids wards.
He was working the male and female wards. Also helped in emergencies in the hospital. When the Physician Assistants went on strike, he had to hold the fort at the OPD to be able to see all those patients that were not attended to. Is this wrong? I was expecting you to thank him rather”.
Dr Gudu said, he is disappointed and down-spirited, and never imagined to wake up to such baseless accusations leveled against him.
