The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Talensi Constituency has described as unconscionable and a betrayal the failure of government to complete the affordable housing project at Pusu-Namogo in the district.
The party said government has neglected the project after constructing just a two-bedroom structure despite making political capital out of it in its bid for reelection in 2020.
The abandonment of the project, the NDC asserted, has deprive people of the region especially farmers, whose farmlands were taken over for its siting, not only access to decent accommodation but also their source of livelihood.
“It is unconscionable that we are witnessing the utter neglect and abandonment of this ambitious project, which the governing party drew a lot of undeserved political capital from in its re-election bid in the 2020 general elections,” it said in a statement issued by the Constituency Communication Bureau
“The government’s failure to keep faith with its promise to deliver on the project has left the good people of the area deceived, swindled, and disillusioned”
The party cannot fathom why government will cut sod for a new housing project at Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region and commit to complete it within a short period of time while the Rock Estate project, whose sod was cut years ago has been left abandoned.
It said while it is not against government providing such social infrastructure in other parts of the country, it is deceitful, insulting and betrayal of the trust of the people that it would take over their lands to undertake the project but failed to commit to it.
“By abandoning the project, Nana Addo-Bawumia’s administration has not only betrayed the trust of the people of Talensi and that of the Upper East Region but also jeopardized the People’s access to their farm lands, their source of livelihoods, which was taken away from them without appropriate compensations, and their access to social housing, which is critical to a sustainable and equitable society at a time when the prices of building materials are out of the reach of many Ghanaians owing largely to the maladministration of this regime”.
President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in late 2019, cut sod for the construction of 120 affordable housing units at Pusu-Namogo in Talensi District.
But not much has been done at the site of the project christened Rock Estate Affordable Housing since that ceremonial event.
Few structures have been put up but have been left abandoned.
Deputy Minister of Works and Housing and MP for Binduri, Abdulai Abanga had attributed the stall of work on the project to lack of demand for the houses being built.
But for the NDC, the government simply lacks foresight and is not committed to improving the living conditions of the people of the area.
“The government’s neglect has not only shattered the hopes of those in dire need of housing but also exposed the administration’s lack of foresight and dedication to improving the living conditions of the people of Ghana”.
