The nomination of a relative of a late district chief executive to replace him has received support from a local opposition official, who described the move as both timely and comforting to the bereaved family.
Edward Asekere, communications officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency, said the decision to appoint Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, a relative of the late official, brought mixed emotions but ultimately helped ease the family’s grief.
“Though they were mourning, they were also a bit happy that the party has not disappointed them,” Mr Asekere said during an interview on Dreamz FM.
The late official died in April, and his replacement was announced weeks later. Some residents questioned the timing of the nomination, suggesting it should have come after burial rites.
However, Mr Asekere said governance could not be put on hold, noting ongoing development needs in the district.
“People are suffering, people don’t have drinking water. We cannot allow that to continue,” he said.
He described Diana Ayamga as capable and experienced at the grassroots level, expressing confidence in her leadership.
“She is calm, respectful, and diligent. I believe Bongo will benefit from her leadership,” he said.
Mr Asekere contrasted her background with that of a previous female district leader, whose tenure he said was marred by conflicts, partly due to lack of political experience and consultation.
He urged the incoming official to remain humble and inclusive, warning against the dangers of political arrogance.
“You can never hold power forever,” he said.
Beyond the appointment, Mr Asekere reiterated concerns about entrenched political divisions in Bongo, which he said hinder development and cooperation.
He called for a shift toward unity, citing the late official’s efforts to bring together individuals across political lines for the constituency’s progress.
“If we come together and pool our resources, we can solve many of Bongo’s challenges,” he said.
He added that the unity displayed during the funeral should serve as a model for future collaboration in the district.
