Upper East Regional Communications Team member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Moses Amoah, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) exploited the LGBTQ bill as propaganda to win the 2024 general elections, yet has attached no seriousness to its passage and assent since assuming office.

Mr Amoah said the NDC made it appear to Ghanaians that former President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and the NPP were never in support of the bill, painting them in a negative light ahead of the elections.

He charged that the NDC’s propaganda successfully swayed public opinion against the NPP, contributing to the party’s unpopularity and its eventual loss in the 2024 polls.

The bill, formally known as the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, was passed by Ghana’s parliament in February 2024 under the NPP administration. The legislation seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ identification, advocacy, and acts, with penalties of up to three years imprisonment. Supporters, including religious bodies and traditional authorities, have continued to press for its assent, saying it reflects the cultural and religious values of the majority of Ghanaians.

However, Mr Amoah stated “It’s exactly one year the bill has been sitting in parliament doing nothing. We want to see the speed with which the NDC wanted Akufo-Addo to sign the LGBTQ bill, under NDC John Mahama government. NDC used LGBTQ propaganda to win elections,”
