Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Spokesperson for the Campaign Team of flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has described the party’s upcoming Special Delegates Conference as an unnecessary exercise.

Mr. Buaben Asamoa argued that the process has no bearing on who becomes the party’s next presidential candidate and will only distract campaign activities of contestants ahead of the main primaries.

He is, therefore, suggesting an amendment of the party constitutional provision that mandates it to undertake such an exercise going forward.

“At this time that we are going to have that conference, I really think it is so unnecessary. I think it is just a distraction from normal campaigning that one has to stop and go and organize oneself over 16 regions in order to conduct a process that has no bearing on popularity .

Maybe, in future, as a party we need to look at the constitutional provision and make it more flexible in order for it to serve the party better,” he said in an interview on JoyNews.

The NPP is scheduled to hold a Special Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023 to trim down the number of presidential aspirants to 5. This was after its Vetting Committee cleared all 10 persons who filed nominations to contest the party’s presidential primary.

The rules of the party mandate it to conduct such an exercise if the number of candidates contesting for the flagbearer position are more than 5.

The rule was instituted to prevent a repeat of the 2007 happening which saw about 17 persons contest for the position.

But Mr. Buaben Asamoa said it is unnecessary.
