Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga says he will not rescind his decision not to contest the Bolgatanga Central seat in 2024 despite numerous calls on him to do so.
Speaking in an interview on Breakfast News, Mr. Asanga said he currently got his hands full with his job as MCE and do not intend to burden himself further with the position of a parliamentary candidate especially when there are others in the party who need such a spotlight.
The party, he said, has many youngsters in the constituency, who are doing extremely well and must be given the opportunity to lead its quest to win the Bolgatanga Central seat.
“I really don’t think that it’s something that you must be hanging on at all time when there are people who are waiting in the wings to also come up in the political limelight.
I’m thinking that given the enormous amount of work that I have to do as MCE, I should focus and really do a job. Because we have so much work to do. So if I combine a campaign and all that then I will be torn in so many directions that you lose focus,” he told Head of News, Nicolas Azebire.
He encouraged his supporters to accept his decision and rally behind whoever is elected as parliamentary candidate so that the party could realize its quest to snatch the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“There are quite a lot of people, youth have called upon me and said that I should resend my decision but I just want to assure them that I’m going to play my part as MCE, I’m going to support whoever comes up as the candidate and that they should have fate”.
Rex Asanga made attempts for the seat on two occasions – in the 2016 and 2020 Elections on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party.
He, however, lost on both occasions to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) Isaac Adongo who currently occupies the seat.
Mr. Asanga was, subsequently in 2021, appointed as MCE for the area.
